Kanchenjunga (28,208 ft; 8,598 m), The World's
Third highest peak
![]()
t 28,208 ft, Kanchenjunga
is the third highest mountain on eath. Its name is Tibetan and means "Five Great
Treasuries of the Snows." Stradding Nepal's eastern border, it towers over Sikkim,
and the excellent views of it from Darjeeling made it the best-known peak in the Himalaya
a century ago. For a time it was even believed tobe the world's highest mountain.
Mountaineers scaled the main summit in 1955, but severe weather and avalancehs cahnnlenge
the expeditions.Like Dolpo, this formerly restricted area was opened in 1989 to organized treks. The restriction is int4edted to protect the region from environmental and cultural pressures (maximizing profits was another idea), but judging fromthe ribbons of toilet paper festooning the trail, the plan hasn't been too effective. Solo trekkres still manage to explore the region, but difficult logistics place it in the realm o forganized trek. There are no settlements along hte upper prtion, so enough food and shelter management should be taken with great care. (From Nepal Handbook, by Kerry Moran) Adventure Makalu announces one 1. Kanchanjunga Trek, One of the most difficult treks in the world, due to the only reason of taking enough supplies.
Kanchanjunga Trek (Mar-May, Sep-Oct) The Kunchanjunga massif forms Nepals eastern border with the Indian state of Sikkim. As a restricted area, only authorized groups are allowed into this region. A magnificent trek takes us through hill terraces, forests of fir, bamboo and rhododendron and an abundance of small waterfalls. The flora includes 5 types of rhododendrons and 2 types of magnolia. A remote trip along the Tamur River Valley, where villages are few and wild-life includes Musk-deer, langur monkey, blue sheep and the ever elucive snow leopard. The Mamemrgier, a bird with a 9 ft wingspan may be seen high up on the snow ridges. Kanchanjunga has three 8000m peaks and eleven above 7000m. A stunning trek for even the most hardened trekker.
