Trekking Nepal with Adventure Makalu Travel

HOME TRAVEL RAFTING SAFARI TIBET

As I stepped out on my first day's march in the Himalayas, a strange exhiliration thrilled me. I kept squeezing my fists together and saying emphatically to myself and athe universe at large: "Oh yes! Oh yes! This is really splendid!"

-Sir Francis Younghusband

EVEREST
Mt. Everest, at 29,028 ft is the highest moutain peak of the world. Also, known by the third pole, Everest soars as Sagarmatha high above the sky and the clouds. This region also includes Lhotse (27,923 ft), Cho Oyu (26,750 ft) and Amadablam (22,491 ft).
KANCHENJUNGA
The third highest in the world after Everest (29,028 ft) and K-2, Kanchenjunga (28,0208 ft) trek is regarded as the most difficult and elite trek only after the Everest Expedition.
MAKALU As the fifth highest in the world, Makalu (27,825 ft) was once the highest peak in the world before the discovery of the Everest and K-2.
MUSTANG
Also, called the land of Lo, Mustang (15,000 ft) is named as the alternate Tibet. This forbidden land until 1991, is the most classic of all the treks, when the trekkers pass through the deepest gorge in the world.
ANNAPURNA The most famous and popular among all the mountain trekking is the Annapurna (26,545 ft) circuit. Passing through the windy pass, Thorang La (17,770 ft) is considered the most difficult short path after the Hillay summit.
DHAULAGIRI
Dhaulagiri at 8,167 m (26,795 ft) is the sixth highest in the world and together with Annapurna makes the deepest gorge in the world at 6000 m deep. The trek to this residual mountain (unlike himalayan fold mountains), as the only of its kind in the country, is adventurous and worth.
DOLPO
Sworn in by the Tibetans after 1959, this remote valley is three weeks of walk to the nearest road. In one of toughest treks, the trekkers are rewarded with the sight of ancient monasteries and the sacred crystal mountains at 16,000 ft.
LANGTANG Perhaps the nearest trekking route from the capital, this trek leads to several other to Gosaikunda, the holy land, and Helambu.
OTHERS Other mountains such as Manaslu (26,766 ft),  Ganesh Himal (24,298 ft) and Gauri Shanker also offers some of the best and aspiring treks in the himalayas. Treks to Rara lake and to the western corner are just as exotic as others.

Everest - the World's Highest Peak, 8848 m (29,028 ft)
Back to Trek List

The World's highest peak was discovered in 1852, when routine calculations of the Survey of India revealed a remote mountain on Nepal's northerm frontier to be over 29m000 feet. Peak XV, as it was labeled on the survey's map, was so isolated no local name could be found. Everest was nothing special to Sherpas, who l ived surrounded by dozens of great peaks. (The Nepali name Sagarmath ":Brow of the Oceans", was appended few decades ago.) Tibetans living on the northern side had a number of names for the mountain, though efforts to translate them seem to have run aground. The list includes "The cooking pan of the queen of th efive sister goddesses" and "Wind Goddess" Best known as Jhomolunga, poetically rendered as "Mother Goddess of the Earth, "though "Valley Goddess" would be more accurate. Survey officials took the most prudent course and named hte mountain after their recently retired boss, Sir George Everest.

Kanchenjunga, the world's largest mountain and third highest (28,208 ft; 8,598 m)
Back to Trek List

At 28,208 ft, Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain on eath. Its name is Tibetan and means "Five Great Treasuries of the Snows." Stradding Nepal's eastern border, it towers over Sikkim, and the excellent views of it from Darjeeling made it the best-known peak in the Himalaya a century ago. For a time it was even believed tobe the world's highest mountain. Mountaineers scaled the main summit in 1955, but severe weather and avalanches challenge the expeditions.

Like Dolpo, this formerly restricted area was opened in 1989 to organized treks. The restriction is int4edted to protect the region from environmental and cultural pressures (maximizing profits was another idea), but judging from the ribbons of toilet paper festooning the trail, the plan hasn't been too effective. Solo trekkres still manage to explore the region, but difficult logistics place it in the realm of organized trek. There are no settlements along hte upper prtion, so enough food and shelter management should be taken with great care. (From Nepal Handbook, by Kerry Moran)

Adventure Makalu announces one excluisve trekking package to the Kanchenjunga massive

1. Kanchanjunga Trek, One of the most difficult treks in the world, due to the only reason of taking enough supplies.

hr_line.gif (139 bytes)

Kanchanjunga Trek (Mar-May, Sep-Oct)

The Kunchanjunga massif forms Nepal’s eastern border with the Indian state of Sikkim. As a restricted area, only authorized groups are allowed into this region. A magnificent trek takes us through hill terraces, forests of fir, bamboo and rhododendron and an abundance of small waterfalls. The flora includes 5 types of rhododendrons and 2 types of magnolia. A remote trip along the Tamur River Valley, where villages are few and wild-life includes Musk-deer, langur monkey, blue sheep and the ever elucive snow leopard. The Mamemrgier, a bird with a 9 ft wingspan may be seen high up on the snow ridges. Kanchanjunga has three 8000m peaks and eleven above 7000m. A stunning trek for even the most hardened trekker.

Mt. Makalu (8,470 m 27,825 ft), The world's fifth highest mountain
Back to Trek List

Making the largest valley in the world, the Arun Valley, this himalayan mass was considered the highest mountain in the world, before other higher mountains were discovered. This mountain forms a base to the valley as well as to the Makalu-Baun Conservation Area. This mountain gives birth to the Arun river, one of the largest in the country and a pilgrimage to Arun-Barun Dovan. Arun valley is the largest collection of birds (over 650 species of birds) and butterflies (over 800 species of butterflies), and shelters the rare and endangered red Panda. The double pass enroute to the base camp is considered difficult and dangerous, because one leads to the Tibetan pamirs from where the trails disappear, and the other to the Base Camp.

Mustang (ave altitude 15,000 ft; 4,800 m), The Mystical Land of the Lo
Back to Trek List

hr_line.gif (139 bytes)

Dolpo's neighboring kingdom, where myth and fantasy seem stronger than reality, is Mustang, reached by a ong, trek through Kali Gandaki gorge over the one, desperately hihg, south-east facing pass into Dolpo. The native name for this lunar land of canyons and ridges is Lo. In the capital, Mustang, dominated by fortress walls, hte central feture is the massive white-walled Royal _alace in which lives the world's least known monarch. Schools are bringing change. But while the youngsters come home filled with stories of space fights which they've heard on the classroom wireless, their grandparents still believe the world is flat and shped like a half moon.

More on Mustang and Lo Manthang

Adventure Makalu announces one rare trekking package to see: Mustang, The Forbidden Land of Mysticism

Lo Manthang, in fact is the full name of the 2,000 sq km (772 sq mile) kingdom of His Highness King Jigme Parwal Bista, founded in the fourteenth century by the Tiberan warlord Ama Pal, It lies on a barren valey floor at around 4,800 m (15,000 ft), snug against the Tibetan border on three sides and guarded by formidable 7,300 m high mountains pierced only by narrow passes. On the Npela side, massive Dhaulagiri, at 8,167 m (26,795 ft) the world's seventh highest mountain, provides the defence which has sealed Lo from the outside world through centuries.

Fabled Mustang, as it's now known on the map, is only and "honorary" kingdom these days but each night King Jigme, the 25th monarch sonce the 1480s, orders the only gae of the mud-walled capital shut and barred to keep out invadrs or intruders. Twelve dukes, 60 monks, 152 families and eight witches occupy the capital. King Jigme still owns serfs who plow his stony fields for grain crops. But Lo's treasures are many and priceless: a wealth of Tibetan art, monasteries - the name derives from the Tibetan phrase meaning "plain of prayers", mon thang - are carved into cliff faces. You climb ladder to reach them. Other wealth lioes in the rocky hills: turquois, and tich deposits of alluvial gold on the beds of the rivers that course throught hte land. But Lo's citizens consider the task of planning for this metal beneath their dignity.

The King's subjects - Lopas, who are Laimaist Buddhists - number around 8,000 and speak their own dialect of the Tibetan language. The women practice polyandry - often marrying two or three brothers. The king keps his authority as a ruler by virtue of a 160 year old treat to King Birendra Shah's dynansty dn payment to Nepal of 886 ruppes a year adn one horse. In return he holds hte rank of Colonel in the Nepali Army.

So archaic is the kingdom, matches were unknown until few years ago and superstitious fears are rampant. The whole land goes to bed in terror of Lo's 416 demons of land, sky, fire, and water, and life is dedicated to warding off evil spirits whch can cause Lo's 1,080 known diseases as well as five forms of violent death. Thus, for three days each year, King Jigme's ubjects celebrate New Year by "chasing the demons": witht he noise of cymbals, drums, and notes made by playin on human skull, filling the air.

Not a single tree grows in this arid and withered land. To supplement their monotonous diet of yak milk adn sour cheese, they nurture fragile gardens. Fro trade ,the Lopas deal in salt from Tibet. The trail they follow winds for 240 km (150 m) aling th eKali Gandali gorge between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. (From The Insider's guide to Nepal. by Brian Tetly)

Mustang Trek: The Land of Mysticism (Sep-Nov, May –Sep)

Mustang, the land of Lo, lie behind the two giants, Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. The Tibetan plateau is a fascinating country offering a unique opportunity to trek through one of the most isolated places on earth. Isolated for so many years due to its remote and politically sensitive situation, Mustang intrigues us with its powerful aura of magic and mystery.

A Shangri-La rich in spiritual reward with a cultural spiritual reward with a culture insight into primitive settlement by devout Buddhist whose life-style remain unchanged for centuries.

We explore the walled capital o fLo-Manthang, virtually untouched since the 14th century and docover monasteries rich in art and history, ruins of old forts and caves adorned religious relics.

North of Pokhara, Nepal's spectaclular diversity appears at its finest. Dhaulagiri I (26,795 ft; 8,167 m), The World's Seventh highest peak
hr_line.gif (139 bytes)
Back to Trek List

At 26,7595, this is the highest mountain that is completely inside the Nepal boundary. This giant peak is also the highest residual mountain of the world, the only of its kind in the Himalayas (fold mountains).  As oppose to its neighboring peak, Annapurna, trekkers seldomly attempt to travel to this side of the deepest gorge of the world. The gorge (over 6,000 m 20,000 ft)  deep is infact the valley between this giant in the west and Annapurna in the east. Dhaulagiris is perhaps the largest mountain in base diameter at the base camp.

Adventure Makalu announces one rare trekking package to see this rock giant from all the four direction.

1. Around Dhaulagiri, An interesting trek to this mountain is rare and very seldomly done.

Back to Trek List

The best known of the many isolated high Himalayan valeys across northern Nepal, Dolpo preserves one of the last remnants of traditional Tibetan Culture. Legends sayit's a bayul, one of the "hidden valleys" created by Guru Rimpoche as a refuge for devout Buddhists in troubled times. Surrounded by high mountains including the Dhaulagiri massif to the southeast and cut off by high passes closed by snow half the year, Dolpo's easiest access is from Tibet, where people emigrated from perhaps 1,000 years ago.

Upper Dolpo sherlters aroun 5,000 people, whose lives revolve around Buddhism, barley, and yaks; their villages (over 4,260 m) are among the highest settlements on earch. A large protion of the region is set aside by Shey Phoksundo National Park established to secure trans-himalayan ecosystem. This includes animals such as blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, leopards, wolves, and the ellusive snow-leopard. The Park conserves the largest lake of Nepal, Shey Phoksundo, and the reedeeming feature of the trek would be the lake itself, considered one of the most beautiful places in Nepal.

Adventure Makalu announces one long trek package to the region where, you'd enjoy the contrasting Tibetan and Nepali culture sharing the same area.

Manaslu (26,766 ft; 8,158 m), The World's Eight highest peak
hr_line.gif (139 bytes)
Back to Trek List

Not a quite popular mountain, even if it is the world's eight highest peak, Manaslu stands as a twin peak not far from Annapurna. With its sister peaks Ganesh Himal and Himal Chuli (both over 25,000 ft), around  it, Manaslu looks like it is the highest and biggest of them all. Flanked by the villages enroute like Manang, Manaslu seems to be a rare trekkers dream. However, people travel to Manang to see a greater view of a massive himalayan range, they go to the Manaslu Base camp. Manang (3,351 m), the unofficial capital of the Annapurna Region, offers spectacular views of the Annapurna and Gangapurna looming over the town. To the south is the view of the north face of Annapurnas, so big that it is difficult to grasp their immense scale.

Adventure Makalu announces two  trekking package to see the Manaslu region.

1. Around Manaslu, Trek to see the giant rock from all the directions.
2. Manaslu-Manang Trek, an opportunity to see the combination of   the mountain and its culture.

Next we travel high up the Buri Gandaki river shere the small villages are inhabitated by Sherpa people.
